About Physical Disability

Physical disability affects a person's mobility, dexterity or stamina. Causes include spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, acquired brain injury and many other conditions. The support needs of people with physical disability are highly individual and depend on the nature and extent of functional impact.

What the NDIS funds

Physical disability is funded by the NDIS where it causes significant and permanent functional impairment. Supports can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, assistive technology, home modifications and personal care. For some conditions that are not permanent (such as early stages of progressive conditions), access to the NDIS may depend on demonstrating the likely permanent nature of the impairment.

  • Physiotherapy and exercise physiology
  • Occupational therapy
  • Assistive technology (wheelchairs, mobility aids)
  • Home modifications
  • Personal care and daily living support
  • Supported independent living
  • Vehicle modifications
