About Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21. It is the most common chromosomal condition in Australia. Down syndrome affects learning, development and physical health in different ways for each person, but with the right support most people with Down syndrome live full and meaningful lives.

What the NDIS funds

Down syndrome is a permanent condition and most people with Down syndrome are eligible for the NDIS. Supports can include early intervention, speech therapy, occupational therapy, supported independent living and community participation. Early intervention in particular has strong evidence for improving outcomes.
