About Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. It affects muscle control, coordination and posture. Cerebral palsy is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain, often before or during birth. Its effects vary widely — some people have mild movement difficulties while others have significant physical and communication support needs.

What the NDIS funds

Cerebral palsy is one of the most common conditions funded by the NDIS. As a permanent condition it generally meets the disability requirements for NDIS access. Supports can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, assistive technology and home modifications.

  • Physiotherapy and movement support
  • Occupational therapy and independence skills
  • Speech therapy and communication supports
  • Assistive technology (wheelchairs, communication devices)
  • Home modifications
  • Personal care and daily living support
  • Supported independent living
