Cerebral palsy is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. It affects muscle control, coordination and posture. Cerebral palsy is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain, often before or during birth. Its effects vary widely — some people have mild movement difficulties while others have significant physical and communication support needs.
