About Brightpath Speech Pathology (Example Profile)
We're a speech pathology practice built around one belief: every child is already communicating. Our job is to find out how — and to help the people who love them understand it too. We know how it feels to sit across from a professional who talks about your child instead of to them. That's not how we work. We presume competence first, always. Whether your child uses words, sounds, a device, signs, or pictures, we start by assuming there's a capable mind in there with something to say. We specialise in non-verbal and minimally verbal autistic children, and we're proud to be AAC-positive — we'll never tell you a device will "stop your child talking." The evidence says the opposite, and so does our experience across 200+ families since 2016. Sessions happen where your child is most comfortable — our calm, low-sensory clinic, your home, or over telehealth. We move at your child's pace, not a worksheet's.

How we work
What each approach means for your child
AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication)
AAC is any tool that helps a child communicate when speech alone isn't enough — from picture cards to a tablet that speaks words when tapped. It doesn't replace speech or stop it developing; research shows that for many children it actually supports it, by giving them a reliable way to be understood right now. If your child is non-verbal or has limited speech, AAC can be the thing that finally lets them tell you what they want, think, and feel.
PROMPT
PROMPT is a hands-on speech approach where the therapist uses touch — light cues on your child's face, jaw, and lips — to help them feel how to shape sounds and words. It's often used when a child knows what they want to say but their mouth struggles to make the movements, like with childhood apraxia of speech. Rather than just hearing a sound to copy, your child is gently guided to feel how it's made.
Hanen — It Takes Two to Talk
Hanen is a way of helping your child communicate by coaching you, the parent, rather than only working with your child in a clinic. The therapist shows you how to use everyday moments — meals, play, bath time — to encourage your child to communicate in whatever way works for them. The idea is that your child learns best through the people they're with most. If your child is still building early communication, Hanen turns ordinary daily life into gentle practice.
Social Stories
Social Stories are short, simple stories written for a specific child to help them understand a situation, expectation, or change before it happens — like starting school, a dentist visit, or a new routine. By walking through what to expect in a calm, predictable way, they can ease the worry that comes from not knowing. If your child finds new or unexpected situations stressful, a Social Story can make the unfamiliar feel manageable.
Other approaches
Gestalt Language Processing / Natural Language Acquisition — we follow many autistic children's natural path to language through scripts and phrases, not just single words.

I'll never forget the day in the car park after our sixth session. My son tapped 'I want Mum' on his device — the first time he'd ever told me something he wanted, in four years. I sat in the car and cried. Brightpath never once treated him like he was broken or behind. They met him exactly where he was and built from there.
Provider response
Megan, that moment is exactly why we do this. Rocco worked so hard for it — we just gave him the tools. Thank you for trusting us with him.
